We are seeking a Remote, experienced Tax Manager to join our team at a publicly traded cannabis company. The Tax Manager will be responsible for preparing and signing quarterly tax returns, ensuring compliance with state, federal, and international tax laws, including the complexities of IRS Code Section 280E. This role requires a strategic thinker who can manage tax planning, oversee tax compliance, and lead a team in a fast-paced and dynamic industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and sign quarterly tax returns for the company, ensuring accuracy and compliance with all relevant tax regulations, including the challenges posed by Section 280E.
- Develop and implement tax strategies and policies to optimize tax obligations and maintain compliance with local, state, and federal tax laws.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation, particularly those related to Section 280E, and update company policies and strategies accordingly.
- Manage and mentor the tax team to enhance their performance and engagement.
- Collaborate with accounting and leadership teams to identify opportunities for process improvement and potential areas of risk.
- Conduct technical tax research and provide guidance on complex tax issues, especially those related to 280E, which disallows deductions for businesses involved in trafficking controlled substances, impacting cannabis businesses significantly.
- Respond to inquiries from regulatory agencies and manage audits as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.
- Minimum of six years of experience in preparing and reviewing tax returns, preferably within the cannabis industry or a similar highly regulated sector.
- Strong knowledge of tax preparation and planning software.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to lead a team and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with equity compensation and familiarity with trial balance software is a plus.
